What is Mental Illness?
A mental illness is defined as a condition that causes serious disorder in an individual’s behaviour or thinking, and covers a broad range of illnesses such as depression, anxiety, schizophrenia, anorexia and obsessive compulsive disorder. Just like other illnesses a mental illness can vary in severity, and also responds to, and requires, treatment.
Mental health problems can have a wide variety of causes; often it is difficult to confidently distinguish what causes a particular mental health condition. Difficult periods of a person’s life, or particular traumas can trigger mental illness. However, biological factors can also play a role in developing mental conditions. Research has found that there may be genetic factors that lead to mental illness, and chemical imbalances in the brain can also be a contributing factor. Other health issues such as suffering from another illness, a head injury or thyroid problems are also associated with the development of certain mental health issues, like depression.
Each mental illness will manifest in a different way. However, symptoms can include withdrawing from others and social situations, erratic mood swings, low mood, intrusive thoughts and a change in sleeping pattern. Like any other illness, each individual may experience their condition differently to another with the same diagnosis.

Mental health is unique to us all; it doesn’t discriminate, and we can all develop problems at different points in our lives. However, the good news is that you don’t have to struggle with a mental health problem. At Myriad Care, we can provide specialist mental health treatment – the most important step is to seek help & support.
It’s normal for all of us to feel worried, sad, upset, or have difficult emotions from time-to-time. For most people though, these feelings are only temporary and are resolved without causing any long-term problems. However, for some people, these negative feelings can become worse over time and lead to a mental health problem such as depression, anxiety, stress or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

Mental health
Approximately 1.4 million people in England have learning difficulties, with 40% likely to have a significant mental illness.
Mental health is still something of a taboo subject, yet at any one time, one in six people in the UK has a common mental health problem such as an anxiety disorder or depression, whilst one in 100 has a severe mental illness, such as bipolar disorder or schizophrenia.
We focus our attention and support on the small steps that lead to a fulfilling and independent future for people with complex mental health illness. We have a wealth of expertise and experience in delivering the right level of individual support and therapy that is fundamental in achieving rewarding outcomes.
Our approach is focused on the needs of the individual and maximising their independence as soon as possible. It is our goal that each person we support can live in the least restrictive and lowest cost environment whilst continuing to be able to access on-going support and the therapeutic engagement of a full multidisciplinary team.

What causes mental health problems?
There is no single cause for mental health problems. There are lots of different reasons why people may struggle with their mental health, and for some, there may be no obvious reason at all.
Genes
Research shows that our genes may contribute to mental health problems. If you have a close family member, such as a parent or a sibling, who struggles with a mental health condition, this makes it more likely that you’ll also struggle with your mental health.
This could be down to a hereditary cause or it could be because you’ve grown up with people who have mental health issues which may have made their behaviours seem normal to you.
